Ultrasound Update

July 11th 23 Weeks

I’ve actually had two appointments since my last update, but since I get pics every two weeks at the perinatal my OB doesn’t print any for me, she know’s they are not nearly as cute on her screen. But She did tell me the I am measuring 27 weeks as far as the size of my big fat belly as my 3yr old niece likes to call it, which I’m ok with, because she said that if I turned into a rainbow I would be a big fat rainbow, gotta look at the bright side. How big is that belly?…I’m measuring 41″ around. Still smaller than my husband from this post at 16weeks.

The babies measured 23weeks and 6days so it’s good that they are growing faster than normal. They weigh approximately 1.5lbs each,  the size if a rutabaga. And since I have no idea what a rutabaga is here is Wikipedia’s explanation. It’s a type of turnip, that looks like sweet potatoes after it’s cooked. But People in Sweden and Scotland eat it, no so much in the US.

My belly is making me laugh a lot these days, the babies move around about half the day for a few minutes each time. Last night my husband saw my belly pop up when someone punched me, he though that was pretty cool. I see it all the time, but I have the patience to sit there are stare at my belly all day.

Here are a few new pics of the girls. The doctors are trying to confuse me now, they both want to switch who’s a and who’s b. A is on my right side and b is on my left, but sice b is “presenting” head down they want to call her a. so far they are named as they have been, I’ll let you know if they really do change it.

A’s face and hands, two shots.

Again, I’m sorry that the captions are not where they are suppose to be. Learning how to use wordpress has been much more difficult than I though, especially when your energy and patience are running low.

I think for the most part I am feeling pretty good, I haven’t had any scary braxton hicks contractions and the doctors give me a good to go as far as everyone growing like they should and blood pressure and such. That being said, it’s easier to breath when I stand, but after a while my legs hurt, so I am the happiest laying down, but not for too long on my back because then the blood doesn’t flow to my brain and I can feel my heart in my ears, or on one side because all the blood rushes to that side and it gets uncomfortable. I have to sleep on my side, so my arm falls asleep which hurts. And I have to tuck a pillow under my belly when I’m on my side because it’s so heavy I can feel it pulling down, which hurts. Last night both girls ended up on one side,so my belly was lopsided and I had a foot or two in my ribs again. b stretches out every evening and tucks her sweet little foot just under my rib so that it feels like someones poking me in the rib, which I guess technically they are. For the most party the face each other all day so all their little hands end up in my belly button area and punch punch punch, all day long. I love it when people get to feel it, they always get so excited, is fun to have those around me share the fun. Just ask first!

Almost 24 weeks, I could have a little as 8 weeks left, or as many as 14, I’m hoping for the later but preparing for the former and just trying to take in as much of the experience as I can while it lasts. Because one thing I have learned for sure over the past few years of my life is that a lot can happen in a very short amount of time so you better take a minute to enjoy it because it’s going to be over before you know it.

June 27th 21 Weeks

It was back to the Perinatal again this week for a checkup and I’m happy to report everyone is doing great. The babies are each weighing 15ozs

that’s about this size, that’s a spaghetti squash.

They were moving around so much during the scan the tech had a hard time getting good pictures of them.

Here is b’s profile

Have a Happy Fourth of July Weekend!

June 13th 19 weeks

I have finally started to feel them moving around, not much, just a tiny little bit here and there. It’s so subtle that if I’m not being super still when they move enough for me to feel them then I miss it. Sometimes I think I feel a little muscle twitch, but the more I talk to the other 15 women in my office who are pregnant I realize it’s them! My husband can’t wait to start feeling them move and kick and punch and whatever else they will do in there for the next four months (hopefully). And he’s really good about saying hi to them everyday, in Hebrew .

It was back to the Perinatal doctor this week and again, everything looks good, no ttts, good! They are very quick and thorough with their check, they just don’t take the time to get the good images like they use to, tisk, tisk. Hehe. That was a joke, they are doing their job making sure that our babies are growing well, which they are. They both measure 19wks and three days gestational age and each weigh the same at 11oz. Their heads are now above my belly button and they are both feet down, but they spin around like tiny dancers the whole time. Which is probably why it is difficult to get good pics. The tech did manage to snap these…

but the rest just look like blobs, like this one

or scary skeletor people, like this one…

She actually has her hands up by her head, which is a good thing for babies, it means they are relaxed (my sister told me that).

I feel really lucky that I get to check in with the babies every one to two weeks, I just don’t know how people can stand not knowing what is going on for months at a time.  12 days until next scan!

a little getaway

by Juliemara
07.7.11

This was the first July 4th Holiday that my Whole family did not spend at the lake together, while it was a great relaxing weekend it didn’t feel like the 4th as much as past years. But with my ever growing belly I was perfectly ok with the mellow mood of the holiday. But where was everyone?? Well, My Mom, and My Dad were at the lake with my sisters two youngest cuties, and the dog, BAXTER. He’s such a cute dog, even if he does try to bite me every once in while, I forgive him. And While my parents were in charge of the two youngest Camp Barny was in charge of the oldest. Her first time at summer camp! Full report to come. As for my sister and her husband they are on a two week tour/learning trip in Israel courtesy of all my brother in laws hard work and being accepted to participate in the Wexner program. Reports so far are that they are seeing a lot, learning a lot and having a good trip. My other sister wasn’t able to make the trip down the GA from NC this time around, we missed her, but she did tell me that she learned how NOT to smoke a chicken for dinner, they ended up eating salad and sides on the overnight camping trip. And my sweet husband had to stay back and keep working hard on our new house, update soon to come.

I spent my time at the lake, swiming, naping, ating, and putting my feet up while watching the kids. I played with them some but they were perfectly content with nick jr and the disney channel, BUT NOT NICK TEEN, It was made perfectly clear to me that 3yr olds and 5yr olds are not allowed to watch NICK TEEN or sponge bob, but they are allowed to watch Peppa Pig, who I have become very fond of!

On the actual holiday we got some visitors, my best friend nurse Peggy and my aunt/Uncle/cousins on My Moms side.

We got to sit on the dock for a while enjoying the lake and watching the boats go by, like this one. The father and son built it themselves! We though it was beautiful.

And Yes, I wore a bikini! Apparently not everyone thinks this is an OK thing to do when you are a pregnant woman, but I figure I wear bikinis normally, they still fit, I’m not fat, and aside from a very small dark line in the center of my tummy I don’t have any gross stretch marks or viens, so until that day comes, I’m wearing my bikini! Warning for all you pregnant women in bikini haters, bikini pictures NEXT!

Then a storm started to come in from the west, so we headed up, and sure enough, five minutes later it was pouring. But it was nice to sit outside and watch it rain.

That was a Happy Day

by Juliemara
06.24.11

I’m talking about this past Sunday. For many men is was Father’s Day! A day filled with greeting cards, cakes and gifts in the shape of a tie, gifts of golf/fishing/hunting/home improvement equipment and of course lots of hugs from the little people in their lives and the people that were once little and always will be in the eyes of their DAD.  My Dad was many hundred miles away in North Carolina so we didn’t get to hang out but my two older sisters and I sent him some fun little things, one of which he still hasn’t received, Grrr. (I love Etsy but when the sellers don’t stay true to their word it gives the whole community a bad name!) He did get to hang out with my middle sister and it sounds like he had a good day. We get to hang out next weekend for the fourth, yeah! I know my Dad is proud of his family and I’m grateful to be a part of it. Love you Dad.

Around these parts we celebrated very differently.  Even though my husband isn’t quite an Abba yet he spent the day doing the most fatherly thing a man can do, building a house for his soon to be arriving little girls and us. It’s coming along great, updated pics on Monday I promise.  I had been able to feel the girls moving around for several days and I was determined to have him feel them too, so we sat on the couch and waited paitently for a and b to start playing and sure enough they did and he could feel it! The look on his face was priceless, I know he is getting excited to meet them.

John from one of my favorite blogs said about fathers day “I learned from my own dad to think of celebrating these holidays not with things, but by doing things… together” I think this is a great was to celebrate everyday, not just fathers day. I hope that our family takes the time in the future to do things rather than get things( as much).

Bumpdate, get it like Bump update : )

by Juliemara
06.17.11

So here it is, growing super fast now.  Yesterday I was lounging by the pool reading a book and I though I felt someone moving around so I took a look down and blup, (that’s what I call it because it sort of feels like a cross between a nervous flutter and food being digested),  I could see a little part of my tummy pop up! So I called over my friend nurse Peggy who was so good about motivating me to do some laps in the pool (thank you) and she saw it happen again!

Now that’s a belly.

look how much it grew since our last photo shoot!

by the way – I’d like to say a big thank you to my sweet husband for 1)taking all these pictures of me, 2)following my creative direction so well and 3) for humoring me in this photographic documentation activity that I make him take part in. You’re the best babe!

Happy Birthday Mom!

by Juliemara
06.7.11

Today is my moms’ birthday. She’s in NC and I’m in GA so I don’t get to celebrate with her but I hope what ever she chooses to do today is fun! Until recently we never knew how old our mom was (I have two sisters), she was always just in her early 30’s, which seamed reasonable to me, until I got to high school, then it was a little fishy. I did my detective work and found out how old she really was, and once I did I realized it really didn’t matter,  she’d always be my mom no matter how old either of us got. A few years ago my mom and her friend threw themselves a big birthday party in honor of thier milestone years, it was a lot of fun, I’m look ing forward to the next big party. But for now here are a few pics I have of my mom and me. I think she looks beautiful.

Taken right before my graduation from the 5th grade.

Ultrasound Catch Up

by Juliemara
06.6.11

I had my first ultrasound at 6wks pregnant to “confirm the pregnancy” oh the confirmed it all right with the overwhelmingly shocking words of “I can’t be certain and it’s still early, but it looks like there are two”. I had to call Yasha on the phone to tell him the news of two, since he was in Italy for work for the week. He didn’t believe me at first, then the phone went silent then it began to sink in.

March 9,2011

Since Many pregnancies start out as twins but only one develops they don’t say that it is twins for certain until nine or ten weeks. So we went back a week later to see if it is still twins. It is. They are as big as blueberries!

March 16, 2011 7weeks

That following Saturday after two weeks of agonizing morning sickness that lasted all day long I woke up feeling great, not hungry or hungover (that’s how morning sickness felt to me) and full of energy. I went for a walk in the park and got really nervous that something was wrong. So the next Monday I called to see if I could come for another ultrasound just to check. This is when I saw two little things that looked something like a babies and saw two little heartbeats. But you can’t tell from the picture. And they are as big as raspberries.

March 22, 2011 8 weeks

My next appointment was my first with my OB. And here’s what we saw…One looks bigger only because one was closer to the front than the other. But they are each the size of a green olive.

April 5, 2011 9 weeks

Here we saw what we had been hoping to see, the glorious membrane that separates the two babies within the sac. That’s why they are called monochorionic-diamniotic (‘mono/di’) twins . If they didn’t have that membrane they would be the highest risk twins possible and I would have had to be on bed rest in the hospital from 25 weeks on. I like my membrane. I’m sure there will come a day when these babies wished that membrane was still there.

Our next appointment wasn’t until three weeks later, at 12 weeks pregnant, I wasn’t even past my first trimester and I was already super spoiled with the ultra sounds. The next appointment was the first with the perinatal doctor. He’s much more fun to go to than the OB, the ultrasound machines are a much higher resolution and first the ultrasound tech does one to take all the measurements and then the doctor comes in and does one to see for himself, so we get to see them twice every time. And now they are as big as Plums.

The doctor told us (or at least me) to come back every two weeks. The babies had to be monitored closely because they are Mono Di twins, since they share a placenta there is a 1:5 chance that they could develop TTTS or Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome, which is when one twin gets all the nutrients from me and the other gets none, it’s not healthy for either baby and can be fixed but has to be caught in order to be fixed. So every two weeks we go to Atlanta Perinatal at Northside Hospital, and although I know I should not admit this, I still have to use my GPS to get there and still can’t figure out the best place to park once inside the deck. I feel like there should be a frequent parking program, like every fifth park is free.

So two weeks later we went back to check on our babies and found out that they are GIRLS! Time to learn how to make grossgrain hairbows! Our sweet little lemons.

just to let you know, they can’t switch sides because of the membrane. That’s how they always know which is which.

Ok, here’s where I messed up, the the next day I had another appointment at my OB. When The doctor did the ultrasound we could see both babies head to toe facing each other, one was awake and moving her arms around, the other was asleep with her head drooped down. The awake one kept pushing the asleep one until she woke up, then they started moving tier arms towards each other, like they were playing. It was really cute. And we didn’t get a picture that day, sorry.

So two weeks later it was back to the Perinatal again. This time I was a little nervous because we had a little baby moon planned for memorial day weekend (see post here) but when I called the nurse to ask the doctor for clearance to fly she said I had to be checked right before, it just worked out that our appointment was the day before we left.

May 25, 2011 16weeks

Everything was great! babies are growing normally and equally! They are now approximately 7oz each. The size of an onion, which is actually a little big for 16 weeks, but some people say that twins develop faster because your body just knows that they don’t usually get 40 weeks of growing time.

And Finally we have caught up. Today I went to the OB again.

June 6, 2011 18 weeks

Now they are as big as sweet potatoes, even though they pretty much look the same as they did last time and the time before that, but it’s a good thing since they are just suppose to be growing for the next four months.  So in an effort to amuse myself I developed a game to play with them. It’s kinda like the cloud game where you try to find shapes in the white puffiness, here you try to find shapes in the black and white blurriness. I see jellyfish, what do you see.

Bahama Mama

by Juliemara
06.1.11

Thus became my nickname for the 5 days on the sunny little island.  We woke up early, took walks, laid in the shade and read our books. Aside from that there was just a lot of relaxing. One of my favorite things about the Bahamian people is that they are not afraid to comment on your pregnancy.  It’s never invasive just something to show that they are excited for you. “I see you’re getting ready!” or ” You feeling ok?” Not like the woman at the pool who after being so nice during our three or four minute chat decided to give me the really bad and stupid advice “just be careful next time” as her parting words. Stupid lady. I could only wish to be so lucky as to have another set of twins one day!

When we arrived on Thursday we had just enough time to squish our toes in the sand and watch the sunset before it was time to eat, again.

This was totally cool. Yasha and I were headed back to the hotel after our walk down the beach and who does he recognize walking along the road, barefoot of course!, Cody Lundin from Dual Survival! He was so nice and let us take this picture with him and his “sweetie”. He and Dave Canterbury were in the Bahamas filming Shark Week for the Discovery Channel. We love watching their show together, this way in case we ever get stranded in the middle of the African Bush we will know how not to get eaten until we get rescued.

The Friday was beautiful and sunny when we woke up, so we decided to go for a walk.

But then I got tired so we had to take a rest.

Finally  we made it to our destination. Yasha loves grocery stores. I learned this early on in our relationship when we use to shop together and he would meander down each isle like he was window shopping? So at home we do our shopping separately because I don’t like to spend an hour in the grocery store if its not necessary, but when we travel I like to see him indulge in this little pleasure, he likes to see what the local people eat.

What to buy??? Water and Coconut water, good choice.

Next we visited a little neighborhood, it was so cute! If we go back to this island we’ll stay here.

Not the best picture of me, but what a place to sit and relax. This little neighborhood had a private beach but you couldn’t walk along it to another beach, there were too many rocks.

Yasha was so sweet the whole time, he could tell when I was getting tired and always offered to carry the bag, even if it did mean he was a guy carrying a purse.

We loved how our hotel room was decorated, simple blue and white with dark would and a fun mix of pattern. It felt fresh and modern. I think we will decorate at guestroom in our new house like this.

I wore my new favorite dress (it’s not new, I just really like how it fits right now) and we had a nice dinner by the pool.

What a day

by Juliemara
05.28.11

We had a great relaxing day yesterday, we ate breakfast in the hotel, went for a walk to see what was around and sat under an umbrella on the beach until it started to rain too hard, then we had a great nap a a beautiful dinner by the pool. Today we rented a car and we are going to see what there is to see around the island.
